Summer Please – Normindia Pamplemousse Gin
Yes, it is another new gin and yes summer is almost over. However, this does not mean that you could not sip a summery gin highball. In this case, I came up with a grapefruit forward Negroni style highball.
For their Pamplemousse Gin Normindia use eight botanicals: apples, bitter orange peel, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, fresh grapefruit, ginger and juniper. They macerate the botanicals for 12 days in wheat alcohol. Afterwards the gin is distilled on a traditional copper still also used for calvados. In the end, the gin is bottle at an ABV of 41,4 % ABV.
Fruity notes
The Normindia Gin starts with typical juniper forward notes. However, soon after that the citrus fruits kick in. At first, you only notice orange flavour, but soon after that the grapefruits used kick in. Apart from that, there are a few spices noticeable. All in all, the Normindia Pamplemousse is a great fit for summer.
Dirty Negroni Highball of some sort
Maybe it was the colour of the gin, but I instantly knew that I had to come up with a sort of Negroni highball with the Normindia gin. Therefore, I combined the gin, the Etna Bitter and the Mancino Rosso vermouth. On top of that, I was in the mood for some olives and added a healthy dash of olive brine. To top everything off, I went for the excellent Thomas Henry Grapefruit Lemonade.
3 cl Etna Bitter
3 cl Mancino Rosso Amaranto Vermouth
Top off with Thomas Henry Grapefruit Lemonade
Stir – strain – chilled Longdrink glass over ice – top off;
Garnish: Olive – Lemon Twist; Song: POLIÇA – Summer Please;
It is kind of obvious that the Negroni flavours work with grapefruit lemonade. So, this recipe basically was an easy win. However, the Etna Bitter also adds its characteristic “wax” flavour to the mix. Last but not least, the olive brine adds salinity as well as some umami notes. This way the “Summer Please” is more than just an easy sipping highball for hot days.
